Restoring Hope & Purpose to lives shattered by
Addiction, Prison & Homelessness
big picture ………
Every week women are released from prison and many are not prepared to meet the
challenges facing them. Their biggest challenge is the destructive force of addiction. Reportedly, 75% of individuals released from prison with a prior addiction will relapse within 3 months of release due to:
· poor social support
· stressful life events and
· persistent exposure to drug use.
Active addiction places individuals at high risk of falling back into the vicious cycle that can quickly spin out of control. Addiction robs individuals of everything from a job to family, housing, friends, hopes, dreams, ambitions and sometimes life.
In 2017 over 65,000 lives were lost to drug overdose in the United States and over 4,600 in Pennsylvania. Lancaster County ranks among the highest in the state, with drug overdose deaths in 2017 of 165. The brokenness and destruction of addiction has no regard for age, gender, race, education or income. The heartbreaking reality of addiction is impacting families and communities across the nation.
The faith community has a principal role in addressing and offering hope to those
struggling in addiction and is called to bring the message of Christ’s power to heal and restore those struggling with addiction. The answer to addiction of any type (drugs, gambling, pornography, co-dependency, shopping etc.) is found in Christ. Addiction is a battle for the heart, without a moral and spiritual change of the heart, the hopelessness will continue. The message of God’s love and acceptance changes hearts. B.I.R.D. Ministries has always offered a Christ-centered consistent message of God’s love, acceptance and personal value. This message will continue as God brings us to an increased focus on addiction recovery and healing in the community.
